I'm not really old enough to say something like, "Oh, yeah I loved that band when I was a kid," but in this world of 90-day music cycles, more than ever periods of my life are marked by the music I was listening to at the time.
This weekend I was reunited with a band that had a significant impact on me starting in the fall of 2001 (all the way through summer of 2002!). That band was Thursday.
Their mix of post-hardcore riffage, lyrical idealism, and angst captivated my pre-college ears and heart. Their lead "singer" Geoff Rickly has now inspired countless tone-deaf youths to pick up a mic and start penning some mediocre lyrics. Thursday also marks an interesting point in techno-history where file sharing was sweeping the high school world. It's music I didn't pay for, but that I will no doubt listen to 50 years from now. Hearing the first fade in of the opening track, the arpeggio in the guitar, the looping vocals... the two snare hits, nostalgia.
